About Us
ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
Can a relationship be established between films and philosophy? What contributions can cinema itself make to philosophy? Is it possible for cinema to engage in philosophy independently, generating original ideas apart from contributing to written philosophy? If films are engaged in philosophy, what differences might there be between the philosophy conducted through images and that conducted through words and writing?
Since 2016, we initiated a CinePhilosophical journey in pursuit of these questions with the Journal of SineFilozofi, the first and only internationally indexed academic journal in the field of cinema philosophy in Turkey. Continuing with the cinema and philosophy symposium series we launched in 2018, our journey reached another stage in 2022 with the Cinema and Philosophy Association.
Today, we are delighted to invite you to the 7th International Cinema and Philosophy Symposium, which will be held in Ankara on December 7-8, 2024, in collaboration with the Journal of SineFilozofi and the Cinema and Philosophy Association. The symposium aims to bring together thinkers, creators, and anyone who seeks to engage with and contribute to the current world.
We are honored to announce our distinguished Invited Speakers in the field of cinema and philosophy for the 7th year of the Cinema and Philosophy Symposium.
This year, our symposium will feature Prof. Mike Wayne, author of books such as “Political Film: The Dialectics of Third Cinema”, “Understanding Film”, “Marxism and Media Studies”, and “Capitalism for Beginners”. Also, Dr. Chiara Quaranta, who works in philosophy and film, ethics and aesthetics, and serves as a member of the editorial board of Film-Philosophy journal, as well as Dr. Cristóbal Escobar, whose research focuses on film philosophy, will be joining us as Keynote Speakers.
The world-renowned Christian Petzold, director of films such as “Barbara”, “Phoenix”, “Transit”, “Undine” and “Afire”, which have won awards from the world’s leading festivals, and Semih Kaplanoğlu, director, screenwriter and producer, who has many national and international awards, will take part in our symposium as our director participants.
In addition to our invited speakers, this year, as in previous years, the Symposium aims to bring together cinema practitioners, academics and all cinema lovers in order to create an opportunity for in-depth reflection and discussion on the relationship between cinema and philosophy. In this framework, the Symposium will include paper presentations by those working in the academic field and those who think about cinema-philosophy, as well as interviews with our directors and artists who have produced pieces in our cinema.
The Journal of SineFilozofi 7th International Cinema and Philosophy Symposium, which will be held in Ankara on December 7-8, 2024, will take place at CerModern Conference Hall in cooperation with Cer Modern Arts Center.
