About Us

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

Can there be a relationship between film and philosophy? What contribution can cinema make to philosophy? Is it possible for cinema to philosophize on its own, to produce original ideas apart from contributing to written philosophy? If film does philosophy, how can this philosophy done with images differ from philosophy done with words and writing?

Since 2016, we have been on a CinePhilosophical journey in pursuit of these questions through the Journal of SineFilozofi, which operates as the first and only internationally indexed academic journal in the field of cinema philosophy in Turkey. Our journey, which comprises a series of cinema and philosophy symposiums that we started in 2018, went a step further in early 2022 with the foundation of Cinema and Philosophy Association.

Today, we are happy to invite you to the Journal of SineFilozofi, International Symposium on Cinema and Philosophy, organized in cooperation with the Journal of SineFilozofi and Cinema and Philosophy Association, on 08-10 December 2023 in Ankara.

For the Cinema and Philosophy Symposium in our 6th year, we are honored to announce our Keynote Speakers who are prominent academics in the field of cinema and philosophy.

This year, Prof. Dr. Ian Buchanan, who works in the field of cultural studies and critical theory, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Damian Cox, who works in the field of philosophy and film, cognitive sciences and ethics and is the author of the book Thinking Through Film: Doing Philosophy, Watching Movies, will take part in our symposium as Keynote Speaker.

Cinema researcher and political scientist Prof. Dr. Kurtuluş Kayalı, a faculty member at Hacettepe University, Department of Philosophy Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çetin Türkyılmaz and a faculty member at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University Department of Philosophy Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sengün Meltem Acar Keskin will take part in our symposium as our local keynote speakers.

In addition to our keynote speakers, this year, as in previous years, the symposium aims to bring together cinema practitioners, academia and all cinema lovers in order to create an opportunity to reflect upon and discuss the relationship between cinema and philosophy. Within this framework, the presentations of those who work in the academic field and those who think about cinema-philosophy, and the interviews of our directors and artists who produce products in our cinema are going to be part of the symposium.
