ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

Can there be a relationship between film and philosophy? What contribution can cinema make to philosophy? Is it possible for cinema to philosophize on its own, to produce original ideas apart from contributing to written philosophy? If film does philosophy, how can this philosophy done with images differ from philosophy done with words and writing?

Since 2016, we have been on a CinePhilosophical journey in pursuit of these questions through the Journal of SineFilozofi, which operates as the first and only internationally indexed academic journal in the field of cinema philosophy in Turkey. Our journey, which comprises a series of cinema and philosophy symposiums that we started in 2018, went a step further in early 2022 with the foundation of Cinema and Philosophy Association.

Today, we are happy to invite you to the International Symposium on Cinema and Philosophy V, organized in cooperation with the Journal of SineFilozofi and Cinema and Philosophy Association, on 09-11 December 2022 in Ankara.

We are honored to announce that in our fifth year five keynote speakers, who are prominent in the field of cinema and philosophy, will be attending the Symposium on Cinema and Philosophy. David Rodowick, who works in the fields of aesthetics and philosophy of art, philosophical approaches to contemporary art and culture, Deleuze and film philosophy; Robert Sinnerbrink, who studies aesthetics, film philosophy, phenomenology, and the ethical possibilities of film experience; Richard Rushton, who specializes in film theories and philosophy influenced by psychoanalytic theory; Patricia Pisters, who is known for her studies in cinema, media studies, philosophy, neuro-aesthetics and neuro-cultures; Martin David-Jones, who stands out for his film studies, philosophy, time and ethics studies—all of them are going to be present in our symposium this year.

In addition to our keynote speakers, this year, as in previous years, the symposium aims to bring together cinema practitioners, academia and all cinema lovers in order to create an opportunity to reflect upon and discuss the relationship between cinema and philosophy. Within this framework, the presentations of those who work in the academic field and those who think about cinema-philosophy, and the interviews of our directors and artists who produce products in our cinema are going to be part of the symposium. We will also utilize simultaneous translation facility between Turkish and English throughout the symposium.

Our symposium will be held in a hybrid form. Participants from abroad may attend virtually. However, face-to-face participation is expected from domestic participants.
